He Said What?

My 8 year old had his first baseball scrimmage of the year tonight. We didn't think we were going to get to have it because of the rain but luckily between the wind and the sun, it dried up enough to at least get a game in.  I keep the books for his team which I like, it just takes a lot of concentration logging who does what. It's a job most other people don't want to do though so I don't mind doing it. I was proud of Andrew tonight, he played really well. He spent most of the time at 2nd base like his favorite Reds player, Brandon Philips, and a couple innings at Pitcher. Overall I was very pleased with his playing. He made a couple great catches and plays and got on base every time he batted.  He's at a fun age to watch, just as they are all learning the game.

As we were leaving, our little monkey Josh was up in a tree with another little boy around the same age. They found a branch that they were using as a Tarzan vine. I was worried about someone getting hurt on it so I reached up and just broke the whole branch out of the tree. The other little boy in the tree looked me straight in the eye and said "I'm going to punch you in the face." Say what?!  I started to ask him who his Parents were when my wife grabbed me and drug me away from the situation. I was in awe. Do kids really talk to grown ups that way today?!  Our kids aren't angels by any means but I can't imagine them being downright disrespectful like that, after all, I was just trying to keep them safe!  I would want to crawl in a hole and die if my kids ever spoke to an adult that way. What's wrong with kids today?!

  1. Ah, those days of little league. I remember our coach putting the "not so good" players in the outfield. I could've written awesome blog posts back then as I sat on the grass waiting for someone to hit a ball far enough to reach me. *sigh*

  2. Unfortunately, kids do talk that way to adults, all the time. I teach first grade and can't believe the disrespect I see every day. Parents are allowing it to happen. I can't imagine speaking to my parents, teachers, or any adult the way kids do now. I would've been knocked on my butt! I feel the same as you, if my son talked to someone like that, I would just want to melt away.

  4. I can't even imagine!! I hate hearing stories about kids who haven't been taught manners and respect. It's not the kids' fault that they aren't learning these things...just sad!!

  5. Sad to say this is the case now-a-days. What is worse, I think, than the blatant disrespect to an adult is the amount of anger and hostility that this child must be harboring already at such a young age. Quite a tragedy I believe.
